3 Spring Shape-Up Tips for Beginning Trail Runners and Hikers

If you’ve decided the singletrack life is for you, a great spring and summer season on the trails awaits. But before charging out to the hills on foot, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially if you’re just starting out. Let your motivation to go off-road lead to happy trails ahead with these three tips.

Less Is More at First

Building endurance takes time, so a gradual increase in distance week over week will help get you in shape without overtaxing your body. The season is long, so take it slow with shorter runs or hikes at first, even if it’s just 20-30 minutes two times a week. More frequent short sessions are better than one big effort in the beginning. Plus, springtime is a great season for taking in new sights and sounds as everything comes to life, too.

Stability and Balance Exercises

One way to strengthen your lower leg muscles and feet is to try zero drop shoes with wide toe box. As you slowly build endurance, you can ease into the comfort of cushioned zero drop trail runners, which will strengthen your Achilles, calves, and all those tiny foot muscles. As far as exercises to help with your stability and balance, a few favorites include glute bridges, banded walks (for resistance), and single-leg balancing holds. Incorporating mobility and strength exercises into your routine is a key part of any active lifestyle.

Focus on Form

One of the great things about wide toe box hiking shoes or trail running shoes is that they allow your toes to splay out in their natural position. This provides the control you need for confident strides as you navigate varying terrain. Look for roomy toe boxes and a low heel to toe drop if you want to focus on a proper midfoot strike and good running form. Ascending and descending skills on technical terrain are another area to work on for more confidence.

There will be plenty of other details to dial in as you progress through the season, so just focus on a few at first. Wearing performance footwear, going for short sessions consistently, strengthening your whole body with cross-training exercises, and working on proper running form will keep you plenty busy.
