3 Tips to Build a Strong Base for Spring Running
The weather is cold, and the races are few and far between at this time of year. It’s officially February. But there’s also that glimpse of spring on the horizon, and you can almost feel it by the end of the month. To start the new running season with strong legs and a fresh attitude, what are some things you can work on this month? February is a great opportunity for early training and building a strong, resilient foundation, both physically and mentally. Here are some tips to set the tone for spring right now.
1. Mix Up Your Run Types
If you’ve been slogging through some miles this winter but aren’t quite as engaged as you’d like, try adding more variety to your runs to keep motivation high. Instead of running your typical neighborhood route, maybe go to a local track once a week. Or, if you’re primarily a road runner, the trails might be a great way to shake things up. Light trail running or even hiking in hiking boots with wide toe box will keep your mind engaged and encourage you to use your muscles differently, including your core, back, and feet.
2. Start Strengthening Your Base
All successful race seasons begin with building a solid base. February isn’t the month you’re chasing PRs. It’s geared toward building a good foundation, so that you’ll be able to run farther and faster later on in the year. This is your month to focus on consistency, running efficiency, and cardiovascular fitness without overdoing it. You can even focus on building your weekly mileage while keeping the pace “conversational” if you run with a partner. Many runners follow the general 80% easy, 20% hard rule during this period.
3. Help Prevent Injuries
First, make sure your shoes are in good shape. This is a great time to buy a new pair of wide toe box shoes that let your toes splay naturally and a secure midfoot and heel for a snug fit. The amount of cushioning you need will depend on your personal preferences and the terrain you run most. Break them in while dialing in proper running form, and you’ll be ready when the training volume increases. Is injury prevention your ultimate goal? Now is the perfect time to focus on strength training, mobility work, and recovery efforts.
