How to Feel Prepared at Your First Trail Running Race

You’ve been running all summer, and now it’s time to tackle the trails in your first race. It’s exciting, if not a little nerve-wracking, no matter how experienced you are. It’s also a great reward for yourself after putting in the miles during training. But before you step out to enjoy the vibes, the scenery, and the dirt beneath your feet, here are a few simple tips. May your first trail run be everything you hope and more.

1. Wear Trail Running Shoes for the Terrain

Road running shoes might get you through a few miles on the trail in a bind, but you’ll want dedicated, trail-specific shoes on race day. They’re built to grip uneven terrain and help you run confidently on loose soil, steep climbs, and rocky descents. An outsole that’s made for multi-surface traction is a great feature in the best men’s and womens trail running shoes, especially on light to moderate terrain with trail to road transitions.

2. Know the Distance Between Aid Stations

Even for shorter trail races, you still want to know how many aid stations are offered and how far apart they are, especially if you don’t plan on wearing a pack. Before race day, check the course map to see where you’ll be able to refuel or rehydrate. Carry a handheld bottle or wear a vest if needed, and bring your own nutrition if you’re picky about snacks. Be sure to practice eating and drinking during your training runs on the trails so there aren’t any surprises on race day.

3. Train in Race Day Gear

Everything from your shoes to your pack and nutrition should be tested before the race. Don’t save anything new for race day, not even socks. You’d be surprised how many people try new gear for the first time on the day of the race, thinking everything will be fine. Wear a shoe you know works well, such as athletic shoes with wide toe box to let your toes align in their natural position as you navigate up and down varying terrain. A cushioned, wide toe box running shoe sets you up to perform your best.

4. Soak It All In

With all the excitement of race day, don’t forget to slow down when you can and savor the experience. Take time to appreciate the views, thank the volunteers, and celebrate reaching your first finish line, no matter how long it takes you to get there.
