How to Prep for the Spring Running Season Starting Now

Are you excited for spring running season? Spring is still several weeks away, but now is an excellent time to prepare. You may already run regularly through the winter, even on the chilliest days, but you might also want to give yourself an advantage when spring comes around.

How can you prepare and give yourself a leg up once the seasons change? Your plan could include upgrading your shoes. Maybe you’ve been eyeing a new pair of running shoes with wide toe box. Or maybe you want a new pair of trail runners.

Whether you’re a casual runner or you’re out there every single day, here are three things you can do right now to prepare yourself for the weeks and months ahead.

Refresh Your Running Shoes

Now is a great time to pick up a fresh pair of running shoes (or multiple pairs, depending on your specific needs). Choosing a new pair now gives you ample time to try them out and break them in for an active spring.

New running shoes can take a while to get used to, even if they’re comfortable and fit great right out of the box. This is also a great time to try different types of running shoes. You may have considered shifting to wide toe box shoes or zero drop running shoes.

When trying a new type of running shoe, using the shoe in a variety of situations is essential. You want to try them in different running conditions and scenarios to get an accurate feel for how they work with your feet, stride, and form.

Set Your Spring Running Goals

What do you want to accomplish this spring? How do you want to push yourself in the coming months? Spring goals can be as simple as focusing more on cross-training, like incorporating biking or swimming into your fitness routine.

You can also set goals that take the bigger picture into account. You may have set overall fitness and running goals for the year. What can you do this spring to keep going strong as you work toward those larger goals? You might set a series of mini goals that help you get closer to your biggest goals of the year.

Create a Training Plan

With your spring running goals in mind, sketch out a training plan. This can include things like planning out routes or scheduling running sessions week by week. You might focus on road running on certain weekdays, trail running on weekends, and gym training to balance it all out.

If you have a running event on the calendar later in the year (like a 5k, half marathon, etc.), now is a great time to sketch out your training plan leading up to the race so you can make sure you stay on track throughout the spring.

How do you want to balance running with cross-training? What kind of nutrition do you want to focus on? There are a lot of questions to consider when putting together a spring running plan! When you answer these questions and get specific about what you want to achieve this spring, you’ll set yourself up for success!
