6 New Year’s Resolutions for Runners

As this year comes to a close, it’s time to think about setting goals for the year ahead. For runners, it’s always fun to set goals or start the year by challenging yourself to break out of your comfort zone. If you haven’t thought of a realistic resolution for the upcoming year of running in your wide toe running shoes, here are six New Year’s resolutions to consider.

Create a Consistent Running Plan

If your goal is to improve your fitness, consistency is key. While you may still experience some fitness gains from running intermittently, you’ll experience lasting and even life-changing benefits from practicing the healthy habit of running regularly. This year, commit to a consistent running plan.

Train with a Group

If you’ve only gone on solo runs, consider joining a running group this year. Not only is working out in a group fun, but it can also be a motivating way to keep your training fresh and exciting. That way, you’re more likely to stick with it. Plus, a running group is an excellent way to make friends who enjoy running just as much as you do.

Incorporate Strength Training

If you’ve exclusively been running as your main form of exercise, adding one to two days of strength training to your weekly exercise plan is an excellent goal for the year ahead. Incorporating a balanced strength-focused regimen can also help reduce the chance of muscular imbalances and injuries.

Set a Race Goal

Maybe this is the year for you to take your zero drop running shoes to the races and cross the finish line. Depending on your prior experience, set a specific, measurable goal. For example, perhaps you want to beat your personal record in a 5K in the spring or work your way up to completing a half-marathon in the fall.

Stretch Every Day

Making daily stretching your New Year’s resolution is excellent because it helps increase your flexibility, improve strength, and reduce your chance of injury. Even incorporating a few key stretches after running in your men’s or womens sneakers with wide toe box can make a big difference in your running longevity throughout the year.

Perform Self-Massage After Each Challenging Session

Including massage as a part of your post-run routine feels good and can help you recover faster by improving your circulation and reducing muscle tightness you may experience. After each run, spend five to 10 minutes using a foam roller or massage gun to keep your muscles loose and ready for further recovery.

Regardless of your New Year’s resolutions, don’t forget to lace up your favorite pair of comfortable trail or road running shoes and start the New Year off strong. Remember, as with all habits, slow and steady wins the race.
