4 Winter Training Tips for Runners Who Love the Long Run
The weather waits for no one. And if you’re a runner, that means training doesn’t stop just because it’s winter. Are you ready to keep up the pace even when conditions get tough? Here are some training tips and advice for long runs.
Wear High Cushioned Trainers
If it’s a mild or dry day, there’s no reason not to wear your high-cushioned performance trainers, especially if speed work is part of the plan. A lightweight sneaker with a wide toe box fit and secure low heel to toe drop can be perfect in the winter. However, if the roads seem slippery or sketchy, wear trail running shoes with durable, lugged outsoles.
Double Your Loops
Instead of doing a long out-and-back run or doing one huge loop, consider doubling up on smaller loops, whether it’s a 3-mile or 5-mile loop. This will give you an opportunity to fill up your water, ditch some layers, or bail out entirely if you’re not feeling it or the weather isn’t cooperating.
Run Outside Unless It’s Too Treacherous
If it’s single digits, super icy, or extremely windy, you might consider skipping the run that day or hopping on the treadmill in your zero drop wide toe box running shoes, if you must get in some miles. Sometimes the conditions will force you inside, and it’s okay to take those days in stride. Some people like to think of winter running the same way as trail running: when the conditions are just right, and you use more caution, the run can be exceptionally fun.
Plan In Advance
Many runners are more glued to their weather apps than their fitness trackers during the winter months. If you obsessively plan your runs, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. If you have a long run planned for Sunday and it looks like a blizzard is coming, you may have to run on Saturday before the weather moves in.
