5 Running Tips to Consider Before Summer Starts
With spring running season currently in full bloom, you may already be
thinking ahead to what’s next. Whether you’re training for a race or
planning to log more daily miles, the summer season will be here before
you know it. That’s when things really start to heat up, literally. To
make sure you can enjoy every moment of the summer running season, stay
ready for anything with the following tips.
Snag New Running Shoes
There’s nothing like a fresh pair of shoes to motivate you for a new running season. Opt for wide toe box shoes
that keep your feet comfortable through every mile. A roomy toe box
lets your toes splay out in their natural position, which is an
excellent design feature in a performance running shoe. Choose a running
shoe that matches your running style, whether it’s a max-cushioned shoe
or a style with a lower stack height. Also, consider where you’ll be
running most often to find trail shoes or road shoes you’ll enjoy
wearing for every run.
Go Early in the Day
Not everyone is a morning person, but it’s one of the best times of day
to go for a run to beat the heat during the summer. You get to catch
the sunrise, enjoy the birds chirping, and breathe in some fresh air
before you tackle the day ahead. If you make it a habit, you might find
that your early morning runs become the most enjoyable part of the day.
Summer mornings are reliably the coolest part of the day, so if you
aren’t a fan of the heat, set your alarm to get started early and
embrace the journey.
Run Inside
Heat
and humidity aren’t for everyone If you have access to a treadmill or
stair climber at the gym, that can be a great alternative to consider
when temperatures really soar. Some fitness centers also have indoor
tracks you can run on. Hitting the gym for a cardio session is also an
excellent way to shake up your routine. Or the gym can offer a reprieve
from running. Take advantage of strength training or other resistance
training to engage your muscles in new ways.
Carry Water with You on Hot Days
A waist running pack or vest that holds water is essential on hot days.
Load it up with enough water to get you through your mileage for the
day. An electrolyte tab or powder is also an excellent choice to add to
your water bottle. Hot temperatures make consistent hydration even more
important, so keep drinking throughout your run. Ideally, you should
already be loading up on water and electrolytes a few days before you
know you’re going to run on a hot day.
Walk When You Feel Like It
There’s something to be said for pushing yourself to the limit, but if
you’re running and your body says, “Nope, not today,” the best thing you
can do is listen to it. This is especially true when you’re contending
with hot temperatures. Humidity can also make it difficult to push
through a tough run because your body has a harder time staying cool,
even as you’re sweating. Consider shortening your run or simply waiting
to lace up your running shoes with wide toe box on a cooler day. Instead, you can try a long walk or another low-intensity exercise if you still want to get moving.
